Help Us with Suggestions! What is Your Favorite Halloween Horror Novel?

The two weeks following Halloween probably feel very similar to each of us. It’s almost a time of mourning. Our favorite holiday has passed, and that means news slows, seasonal updates and features take a hit. It means the spotlight veers from iconic literary figures like Norman Partridge and Paul Melniczek, who have a special place in their hearts for Halloween, to a more diverse crowd who may not be so addicted to October 31st.

That’s not a terrible thing, but those days following All Hallows Eve certainly sting for those who do cherish Halloween.

So we wanted to reach out to you, readers and writers and ask for your help. Even if you can’t point us in the direction of an author who makes sure to pump out an annual Halloween offering, maybe you can at least point us in the direction of some of the very best Halloween-themed novels ever written.

The question is simple: What is your favorite Halloween novel(s)? We really, honestly want to hear your votes, as a lot of us will be looking to cling to this holiday for weeks to come.

My favorite horror novel is Shackled by Ray Garton. And Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons my second.

The things I find scary are not necessarily attached to Halloween in particular. Rather I like the fact that horror is more on most people’s minds. The big things I do like about the holiday though is appearance of horror movies on mainstream tv. Thank you Spike for running Rose Red and thank you AMC for running a Halloween movie marathon. One Halloween story I do like though is Shane McKenzie’s let the kids play or something along those lines. It is a short story in which the kids are locked up on Halloween night to prevent them from going on a monstrous rampage. It is an allegory in my mind for how much we as adults kill the fun of the holiday now days. I have read it like five times now and it grows on me every time. It was in a collection by Shane that I reviewed for this site, but it is also available as a standalone, if I am not mistaken, as a pseudopod episode.

This year my favorite was Night Country by Stewart O’Nan. Great fall/October atmosphere.

This season’s read for me was Laymon’s Night in the Lonesome October – great atmosphere of the uncanny in the everyday. Loved seeing you guys cover it too.
