J.P. Leck ‘The Merely Mortal’ Review

For those of you who are fans of both the old Sherlock Holmes tales and horror, this is the book for you. J.P. Leck takes you back in time where Agent Bertram, a Pinkerton detective finds himself battling those of another ilk.  Using a first person narrative you will find yourself transported into the story, alongside Bertram. With a natural ease the narrative flows so that you forget that you’re reading rather than hearing first-hand what is going on.

Agent Bertram is just “merely mortal,” but has been given the task of recruiting those of exceptional talents to aid him in his task of bringing down a monster. We are introduce to each character individually, learning of their unique gift and back story. We are walked through landscapes that are beyond the realm of one’s imagination. And yes, we find horror! Beware, those who are faint of heart, your fortitude will be tested!

This is Leck’s debut novel, he has since followed with an unrelated second book The Strangely Undying. I really found this to be a fascinating read; when at first I saw the Victorian style language, I was a little doubtful if I could read such a story. But, within minutes I was totally engaged. You are quickly swallowed into the pages and I’m sure, like I was, you will find it hard to put down. Brilliantly written, I do recommend picking up your copy here!
