Terry M. West ‘Heroin in the Magic Now’ Review

Written by: Vitina Molgaard

“It was easier before the magic came, I think,” Gary said. “Do you remember where you were when you realized the magic existed?”

An excerpt from Heroin in the Magic Now

In Terry M. West’s latest novella we find the main character, Gary Hack, living in an alternate version of New York City. One inhabited with Zombies, werewolves and various other monsters including the genuinely most frightening monster, humans.

Gary most definitely fits into the last category, as a drug addicted, burned out author/sometime actor he now finds himself involved in making pornographic movies. One big thing in this seedy underworld is different, the performers are the monsters and their fates are tragic, experienced in full once their performance is through. And not one individual is left unscathed here.

The characters that we become acquainted with are quite a group of people. Those he would call friends have some decency left in them, but not an abundance – they’re living the same lifestyle after all. But life is going to get even more difficult as Gary is introduced to one Johnny Stuckee, a monster in every sense of the word.

The places this story goes to are disturbing and the intensity of it left me feeling its ugliness down in the core of my very soul. It touched me in some deep private region of my own personal being and with good reason. Things resonate.

Don’t miss out on this one. Terry West has written something special here. He’s placed part of his own life – a difficult time at that – on full display. He raises some interesting questions and forces readers to ponder mortality and how we manage to get through some of our lives with any humanity left when we have chosen a path that leads us into profound darkness.

I anxiously waited for this one and never for a moment have felt that I’ve been let down. While this one goes to dark nasty places, I recommend you order this and give it a read.

Heroin in the Magic Now will available on August 31st from Pleasant Storm Entertainment, Inc. It will be offered for Kindle with a trade paperback to follow shortly.

Thank you Robin Dover…I thought it best to approach this review from this point of view. I am pleased you enjoyed it . After reading what you had to say about this I felt perhaps I failed to get across just how intense this tale actually gets. Mr West went into some deep and yes disgusting places that made me uncomfortable , as I am sure it has anyone who has had the opportunity to read it.I appreciate your comment. Vitina Molgaard

    • Vitina – I agree with you. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to be honest in fiction. Terry has a penchant for honesty in storytelling. We all have a lot to learn from the things Terry pulls from his gut and his heart. It’s touching.
