Tim Curran ‘Blackout’ Review

Tim Curran is one of those guys that people talk about when you speak of ultra violent and gory horror.  Books like Biohazard, or The Devil Next Door are a couple that I’ve read that made my stomach turn.  I was wondering where Blackout might lead me when I got this from the publisher to review.

It’s got a premise that is simple, the town goes dark, and something strange is happening on Piccamore Way.  These snake-like cables drop from the sky picking up anyone who touches them.  But who, or what are they and why now?

Tim Curran builds on this with every turn of the page.  Each of the characters have their own unique perspective and voice of the events, and the group survival mentality is in full effect.  He does a great job of getting across just how dire of a situation this is through their actions and dialogue.  Every bit of it had a purpose and moved this story forward.

The suspense is thrown on and will weigh on you like a heavy quilted blanket.  It will also get your blood pumping and your heart rate up as the tension finally peaks and you get to finally know exactly what these things are.

While everything in this book screams please keep your hands and feet inside at all times while the ride is in motion, I couldn’t help but feel like I’ve been there and done that before.  Everything from the characters to the way the suspense is built to the ending.  Then it hit me.  I realized that it drew strong parallels to King’s The Mist.

With that though, you know you’ve got some top notch suspenseful horror here.  DarkFuse is quickly becoming a leader in the horror publishing industry with its top notch talent.  I’m happy Tim Curran is a part of this.

The Bottom Line:  It’s a buy from me.  If you think horror is nothing but ghosts that say woo, or bloody messes, this will change your mind.  It’s about the people trying to figure out this mystery, and what happens to people when faced with unimaginable peril.

Pre-order it right here.

  1. Oooh, this sounds brilliantly creepy. You had me at the title, “Blackout,” plus creating something malicious out of something mundane that we take for granted is exactly the thing that gets me the most. Definitely keeping an eye out for this one.

  2. It is very brilliantly creepy! I hope you pick it up when it comes out…although you’ll have to wait until August….this novella is worth the wait.

  3. This sounds good. Now on my huge list of “to read” 🙂 BTW, those Zappo’s Ads on all the images are a bit annoying, do you know they’re there?
