K.Z. Morano ‘100 Nightmares’ Review
Written by: Paula Limbaugh
“It takes a brief encounter with death to cause enduring nightmares.
A single well-placed blow can maim you for life.
One well-placed word could haunt you forever.”
It’s been awhile since I’ve been this excited over a book. 100 Nightmares by K.Z. Morano is comprised of 100 flash fiction stories written in 100 words daily. Coupled along with some amazing artwork, this is the book you won’t be able to put down. Like an addict you’ll find yourself saying “just one more.”
The imagination of K.Z. Morano is hard to fathom. She states in her bio that she is a beach bum and chocolate addict, so how this seemingly innocuous woman can harbor so many dark disturbing thoughts is incomprehensible.
The stories run the gamut from unimaginable deeds such as lovingly sewing a quilt made from grandpa to mommy cradling a turkey while dinner is cooking.
There are maniacally fractured nursery rhymes and fairy tales that will send shivers through your soul. Such as the old woman who finally found a solution to those too many kids or the great fall of the Humpties. I don’t think Junior will be asking for anymore bed time stories after hearing these.
Sifting through Diaries of Bones we find an overly ambitious elf, a father trying to remember what heaven was like, and The Travelling Circus where the performers bring the house down with their finale!
You’ll learn in graphic detail about Yōkai Monsters in Japan. Here you will find the reason why Jorōgumo is known as the prostitute spider and the details behind the urban legend of Kuchisake-onna.
I can’t say enough about this book, such a brilliant concept with no two stories alike. Timeless enjoyment to be reread over and over, I LOVE this book! Buy it now!
Rating: 5/5

Based on a Paula’s laudatory review, I purchased Nightmares. I had never read or heard of Ms. Moreno until this review. I’m about a third through the book and am blown away. Moreno’s dark, bent and visual prose poems read like Lydia Davis on acid. Regardless of genre, this is singularly great writing.
