Mike Robinson ‘Skunk Ape Semester’ Review

Our search to prove or debunk the validity of the ‘paranormal’ world would be rendered moot if we just realized that the ghosts and the alien conspiracies paled compared to the mystery of the person in the mirror.                                                                -Excerpt from Skunk Ape Semester

This story is one that fits more into the speculative and or paranormal arena. Not a new place for Mr. Robinson, who likes to travel along those pathways frequently when writing. Mike again does what he does best: provide a thinking person’s read.

The prologue introduces our main character Jeremy Fishleder back in his youth when he had his first encounter with the giant ‘man-monkey’, face to face in his own back yard. A rock-throwing monster covered with hair, and smelling so foul that he called him a skunk ape.

Over the years he has become Dr. Jeremy Fishleder. A zoologist and an amateur Bigfoot researcher. A man curious about most anything fortean, who on occasion likes to go on road trips and expeditions in search of the weird and unknown.

After a shake-up at work and a health issue our protagonist finds himself pondering his life and decides to take the ultimate journey to see what he can discover and perhaps find himself facing his own skunk ape once again.

The various experiences in this tale are what we find ourselves relating to. Being an active reader of Mr. Robinson, I found myself considering a great deal of what he has written in these pages and questioning my thoughts about these beliefs. As I mentioned above, while this is a trek taken by the characters, it’s also really aimed at you, the reader; the thinker. Someone who is willing to explore and give consideration to their own life.

I certainly recommend this story, not just for the exploration into the fortean world but also for the time spent recognizing and perhaps finding yourself. This is a top notch read from one of today’s stronger genre contributors.
