Written by: Vitina Molgaard
“Because the Devil tempts, honey. He tries to make men lost their way. Jesus went into the desert to pray and understand his purpose, and the Devil tried to tempt him away from his purpose.”
Granny answering Toddy’s question
This is a different tale from , Saving Granny from the Devil is a short story that is unlike anything else you may have read from Todd Keisling. This is something of an autobiographical journey, heavily infused with an obvious fantastical aspect. Mr. Keisling has put himself out here with this one, and as such I believe you will not only be pleasantly surprised by the depth of the tale, but you’ll also actually gain a little insight into his personal life – to some degree. Regardless of how much of the story is influenced by factual events, remember that this is ultimately a work of fiction, so take it all with a grain of salt, and enjoy.
Toddy absolutely adores his granny, she has long been the motivating force in his life. He spends the largest portion of time with her, since his Mother needs to work. When not sharing time with close family, life is not so easy for this young man, as he is bullied frequently by two older boys. One day he wanders off too far and finds himself trapped by his two rivals yet again. This time things turn out quite differently as he fields unexpected assistance by one Mr. Harvey J. Winterbell. Mr. Winterbell is definitely not what he appears to be, certainly not the savior he initially seems to be.
Time passes and life continues to do what it normally does, change. Those changes are not all for the good, and our young man experiences some seriously impacting moments that are destined to have life altering effects. How will Toddy handle things? That remains to be read, by you of course.
As I mentioned earlier, Mr. Keisling does share a portion of himself here, along with the anticipated dose of straight forward fiction. The combination is effectively moving, and it’s worth your time to jump into the man’s world. You’re going to learn some things about Todd, and you’re going to get a nice reminder that, ultimately we all need to account for who we are and what we accept as the truth. I’m telling you, this is an intimate piece.
Saving Granny from the Devil is an extremely well-crafted story, no doubt about it.
