12 Days of Christmas: Wolfsbane and Mistletoe – Donna Andrews ‘The Haire of the Beast’ Review

Written by: Matt Molgaard

I love a level of subtle cruelty. A woman scorned has a wonderful way with such practices, and this tale’s focal female exercises her desire to extract a little revenge with not so much as a second thought. She’s intelligent and crafty, but there’s a mild maliciousness in her character that works to the surface as the story begins. She’s a cool cat, but she’s definitely got an affinity for black humor.

See, this woman’s brother, Tom has been overcome by the desire to actually transform into a werewolf. He’s got the documentation and spell recipes to make it happen, but he needs a little guidance from big sis, who just so happens to be extremely bright. Well, sis decides to create this spell, but she’s got a twisted little design running through her think box: before offering the concoction to her brother, she’s going to play a little bit of a game. She gifts Phil, her ex-boyfriend a batch of cookies laced with this powerful potion.

If someone’s got to be the guinea pig, why not a douche bag ex rather than a loved sibling? Seems like a great idea, until she discovers that Tom’s been paying Phil frequent visits, and it’s he who has sampled these cookies.

There’s no need to throw the big twist at readers of this review. The story is remarkably brief, and the climax is most definitely rewarding, on a very dark level. The story’s characters are likeable, and as quirky as they may be, it’s hard not to find yourself attached to their personalities. Just don’t get too attached to their physical nature, because a few players are about to undergo a really twisted transformation.

Fun from page one, this is a read perfectly suited for audiences of all ages. Donna Andrews is a witty author who turns in a well rounded tale with wide appeal. The Haire of the Beast is funny, disturbing and memorable. Beyond all that, there are a few moral lessons to be learned here, so read this short, you might pick up a few valuable life tips.

Rating: 3/5
